Sleepyhead - Too Much Sleep?
August 20, 2013
Hello

Sleepyhead - Too Much Sleep?

"She's the sleepyhead of the family, is how everyone described me growing up," stated one of my callers in my RN position. She went on to describe how she has always needed more sleep than others, but it didn't interfere with her life until after she gave birth a couple of years ago.

Despite taking prescribed stimulants, the caller stated she could lay her head down and go right back to sleep. Even after 10 hours of sleep, she told me how she never felt rested or refreshed.

This overwhelming need for sleep is called hypersomnia. Hypersomnia that is not linked to any other health condition is called primary or idiopathic hypersomnia.

One of the main symptoms is feeling as if one is sedated and walking around in a fog - even after 10 to 20 hours or more of sleep. The debilitating symptoms interfere with relationships, work, and driving just to name a few.

Find out more about this sleep disorder and a new discovery that may provide hope to those who long to feel awake and rested:
